Manchester-based Salon Offers Free and Discounted Hairstyles

RCNQ salon will be offering free and discounted hairstyles throughout the month so that their stylists can gain experience with different hair textures

RCNQ salon is offering free and discounted hairstyles for afro hair and braiding every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the month. The Manchester-based salon, which specialises in creative styling for people of all backgrounds, wants its stylists to gain experience styling different hair types.

“There’s a huge divide between the diversity and skill sets available in salons, which results in different hair types going to different salons,” says Rob Czlapka, the head stylist and owner of RCNQ. parsing wigs “Black hairdressers typically have the skillset to cater to all hair types, whereas white hairdressers don’t learn how to work with afro hair. Predominantly white salons should be able to provide hair services to all people, regardless of race.”

RCNQ is an inclusive and welcoming environment that provides its clients with an escape from societal pressures to act and look a certain way. The staff wants to provide a comfortable space for all, regardless of gender, race, class and sexual orientation, and give great customer service.

Black hairdressers typically have the skillset to cater to all hair types, whereas white hairdressers don’t learn how to work with afro hair.

“We’re also investing in anti-racism training, to further ensure our salon is a safe space for people of colour,” Czlapka says. “This has been followed up with training to ensure best practice stays in place, and micro-aggression management so individuals know how to handle situations.”

Free and discounted hairstyles

The salon will donate 10% of the profit from June appointments to the Black United Representation Network. BURN is an organisation that advises black-owned businesses in Great Manchester so that there are more Black leaders in decision-making roles. The organisation is collaborating with Be The Business to offer the Advisory Board programme that supports Black-lead businesses for free over 12 months.

The free hairstyles offered by RCNQ, which opened in 2013, includes flat twists, bantu knots and more. 

“Within the next year, I want a completely mixed background of collaborators at RCNQ with the full skills to cater to any person’s needs,” Czlapka says. “We’re striving to include anyone in the experience that we offer, and other salons need to do the same.”

Candace Morrow’s tips to canopy updos with over-the-top ornaments

A little cowgirl confession: I rarely attempt updo hairstyles because I’m a bit — well — tender-headed. Sad, but true. What a waste of loc styles, I know. When I do woman up for such coif creations, though, you best believe I show up and out with buns that mean beauty business. Why not, right?

Well, an instant way to command head-turning dreadlock looks: ostentatious ornaments. But, but! These adornments always make bolder statements moss wig with jazzy updos similar to my pictured donut bun. Here’s how you can accomplish offbeat buns that leave a lasting impression in public by incorporating extravagant hair embellishments:

Cotton candy buns: Rake wavy or curly hair (treating it as if it’s frizzy hair) up into a high bun. Delicately mold and wrap locs into a neat ball, then carefully clip the ball down with stray strands or hair pins. Polish off the look by ornamenting the front, side or back of the bun with rhinestone and vintage-inspired combs like Bel Aire Bridal’s timeless selections.

High pigtail buns: Part hair straight down the middle into two sections. Pull each section into high ponytails, then wrap each ponytail into neat or messy balls using locs to tighten them. Finish off the look with groovy sunglasses like We KoKo’s necklace-inspired My Willows.

Top knot buns: Gather the top half of your locs (or all of them) into a high ponytail. Then divide the ponytail into two halves. Take one half and load locs with motherland jewels like these from Kpellé’s handmade jewelry on stands for extra drama. Next, hold the other half straight up (treat it like a pole) and start wrapping the bejeweled half around it. You can wrap locs as tight or loose as desired. Once you’ve made it to the top, secure the bun with a few stray strands or jumbo bobby pins.

Mohawk buns: Start at the front of the head and gather a few locs for the first bun. Then make your way toward the back of the head — grabbing sections of hair to ball up one right after the other. When you’re done, use bold gemstone hair ties like Tiffany’s Loc Jewels to fasten around one, a couple or all the bun balls to give locs character and charm.

Styling must-nots that will leave locs fragile — real quick

The New Year means kickin’ old habits, right? Well, that also applies to our everyday hair routines. Loc wearers have more styling options now than ever, but one must remember they too need a break from bobby pins and extravagant buns once in a while.

Like most things: Moderation is mandatory. If you want to maintain healthy, flowing locs, avoid too much of these five hairstyling habits, which can leave strands flimsy and weak:

Too muchMaintenance Measure: Loosen up ponytails so your roots aren’t strained, and restrict high buns for special occasions if possible.

Too muchMaintenance Measure: Minimize these hair adornments to formal-event hairstyles. YouTube ways to style locs using individual loc strands instead of solely relying on accessories. Also, consult with a seasoned loctician to offer functional, do-it-yourself hairdos.

The cream melts very easily into an oil base when rubbing into my hands and is easy to put into my hair. It moisturises and holds my hair, preventing frizz.After using the product, I tried to twist my hair overnight and let it out the next morning, it held the curls together but it is quite heavy and clumps the curls. I would have loved it if there was a natural flower fragrance. Overall I find this a good product to moisturise and hold your style. I think I need to try it out a bit more for me to make a decision on if I would purchase this item.
